Is a formal employment contract with my domestic worker required in Portugal?
In Portugal, domestic employment is governed by Decree-Law No. 235/92, as amended by Law No. 13/2023. The employment relationship must be registered with Social Security, and a written contract is strongly recommended — it's mandatory for fixed-term arrangements.
I've employed a domestic worker for years without a formal contract. What should I do?
You can regularise at any time. Once you create the contract in Domicilia, all salary calculations and Social Security contributions are handled correctly going forward.
